11 Days Tour of Highlights of South India
11 Days Tour of Highlights of South India – This beautiful tour starts at the Museum city of Cochin which was poetically described as Queen of the Arabian Sea and also the Venice of Orient where we will visit St. Francis Church which is the oldest church built by Europeans in India and also the place where Vasco De Gama was buried, Jewish Synagogue built in 1568, beautifully decorated with Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers containing giant scrolls of the Old Testament, the Dutch Palace, which has fine collection of mural paintings depicting scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharatha and Ramayana.
Later we will visit the Chinese Fishing Nets which were introduced to Kochi hundreds of years back by traders coming from the court of Chinese ruler Kublai Khan. These giant nets are found on the whole stretch of the coast along Fort Kochi and Vypeen. We will also enjoy a special presentation of the colorfully costumed Kathakali Dance Drama in a local theatre. The next day we will drive to the jetty to board House-boat (Kettuvallom) on the World famous Backwaters of Kerala and spend a night aboard.
At Periyar we will visit the tribals and later drive to an Elephant Camp where we will witness elephant bathing and elephant feeding. We will also take a short 30 min Elephant ride and then drive onwards to visit a Spice Plantation where we will walk through the aromatic spice gardens where the air is laden with the fragrance of nature’s bounty. From Periyar we will travel to Madurai where we will enjoy a city tour and also visit Meenakshi Temple to attend the evening ceremony known as ‘Bedtime of the God’. A colourful procession, in which the image of Shiva is carried accompanied by musicians, temple singers and priests from his shrine. We will visit Tirumalai Nayak Mahal built in in 1523 where we will enjoy sound and light show on the life of the Tirumalai Nayak and the story of the Silapathikaram.
Our next stop will be Trichy and on the way we will visit Tanjore, which is famous for Brihadeshwara Temple & Fort Built by great Chola king in the 10th century with a dome weighing 81 tonnes made out of single granite rock houled on ramps 6 Kms long to be installed at the height of 63 Mts. At Trichy we will visit the famous Rock Fort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. From Trichy we will travel to Mahabalipuram where we will visit Arjuna’s Penance, Shore Temple, Mandapams and the Five Rathas. From Mahabalipuram, we will travel to Chennai and take the flight home.
